A 6-panel Japanese screen from Late Edo Period, around early 19th century. Hand painted with ink, color and gold dust on paper. Mounted with silk brocade border and handcrafted copper, framed with lacquered wood.

The painting features two peacocks beneath a pine tree, with another pine tree fading into the gold dust mist in the background. Nanga school painting. A large portion of empty space is intentionally left to evoke a sense of tranquility and balance within the landscape.

Due to the numerous “eyes” on their tail feathers, peacocks have traditionally been associated with fertility, representing a large, healthy family, and wealth. This rich symbolism has also carried over into modern times, where the peacock is often seen as a symbol of success and overall prosperity.
