This pair of Late Edo period 19th-century four-panel Japanese screens portrays a serene scene of birds gracefully soaring above rolling waves, set against a shimmering backdrop of gold and silver dust mist. The composition masterfully evokes a sense of tranquility and harmony within the natural landscape. Each panel is meticulously hand-painted using ink, gold dust, and silver dust on paper, showcasing the artist’s refined technique and delicate touch.
The work is attributed to Yoshimura Kōkei (1769–1836), one of the ten distinguished pupils of Maruyama Ōkyo. Born in Kyoto, Kōkei was the son of Yoshimura Ranshū and a prominent figure in the Maruyama-Shijō school. His artwork is held in high regard, with pieces included in the collection of the British Museum, underscoring his lasting influence on Japanese art.
